Motor vehicles are long lasting consumer goods of high quality. They do not any longer serve only the need of mobility, but act in an ever-increasing fashion as status symbols. Technology has succeeded in lengthening the life-span of a car by several years. The car companies outbid each other with longer guarantee periods, which can now range between 10 and 14 years.
