Dyeing with reactive dyes available in India, by exhaust method, causes heavy pollution due to strong colour of the unfixed hydrolysed dyes and a very high IDS due to heavy quantities of salt and alkali used. No satisfactory solution is available to this pollution problem so far; as the EDL contains over 85,000 ppm total dissolved solid (IDS) and permissible limit is only 2100 ppm. The use of multifunctional dyes is an expensive alternative that is not acceptable to most of the process houses, which market their processed goods in the domestic market. Some large exporters have started using multifunctional dyes but they have not been able to meet the eco-norms fully. Chemical flocculation methods are a sensible alternative to reducing water pollution. The scope and limitations of chemical flocculation methods have been fully discussed in this paper.
