Developments in urea containing direct dyes and their synthesis are reviewed in the light of published research papers. Valuable symmetrical azo dyes containing urea bridge were prepared after the discovery by BASF by the end of 19th century that amino azo dyes can be reacted with phosgene to give the urea dyes. Several dyes with urea dyes were also made from J acid-urea also.
