The textile industry in India is experiencing jitters about the likely scenario in the post MFA era, with all the global challenges that will emerge once the MFA is phased out. The multi-fibre agreement (MFA) is the precursor to the agreement on textiles and clothing (ATC), which came into being with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) on l January 1995, and provides for the progressive application of full WTO rules to the textiles and clothing sector. These include phasing-out quotas inherited from MFA, over a 10-year period ending I January 2005, when the ATC will wind up and all quantitative restrictions will be dismantled.
