The credit of discovery of the first sulphur dye goes to Troost in the year 1861; however, the genesis of sulphur dyes dates back to the observation that cotton cloth was stained in contact with saw dust which had been used to absorb sulphite leaking from a reaction vessel. The French chemists Croissant and Bretonniere pursued this observation and the first patent on sulphur dyes was issued to them in 1873; the product was made by the- French firm of St. Denis and the name of the product was Cachou de Laval.
