The present trend in organizations pressed to deal with new regulations is to try to expedite compliance to specific laws on a law-by-law basis while overlooking the broader and more important issue of enterprise-wide governance. We submit that achieving mere regulatory compliance does not guarantee that serious and effective enterprise and corporate governance is accomplished by this approach. This drives organizations to spend money and resources without receiving the more attractive benefits derived from identifying and resolving the broader issues of improving aggregate corporate governance that can bring about business improvements in performance and a return on the compliance expenditures.
