摘要

Peter Gray, who has died at the age of 85, was one of the pillars of strength in the British and international combustion community throughout the latter half of the 20th century. Born in Newport, Wales, where he attended the High School, Peter in 1943 (i.e. during the second world war) was awarded a Major Scholarship to study Natural Sciences at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. Having taken a BA (Hons) 1st class, in 1946 Peter began research in the Cavendish Laboratory to investigate vapour phase initiation of explosives. Thus began a life-long interest in spontaneous ignition phenomena, but which evolved into both experimental and theoretical investigations of a much more diverse range of topics.
