On July 31, 2008, Ninni D'Alessio suddenly left us. So many combustion scientists, teachers, and friends crossed and marked his life and were marked by him. To depict Ninni's character and the course of his scientific career we would like to present some extracts from testimonials, written in early 1981, to support his application to professor, and from some more recent ones by friends and colleagues. After completing his studies in Chemical Engineering under the direction of Professor Massimilla (acknowledged by Ninni as his teacher) at the University of Naples "Federico 11" (1967), Ninni went to Imperial College, London (1968-1969) under the supervision of Prof. A.G. Gaydon who writes: "He worked mainly with light scattering from the carbon particles inflames (Mie scattering) and its relation to particle size and the processes of soot formation. I formed the opinion that he was an exceptionally able research student. He was thorough in his work and showed real initiative in extending investigation."
