It has been known for a long time that flames are conductive and susecptible to electric fields that are much weaker than the breakdown field of the flame gases [1-5] owing to the presence of ions in the high temperature flame reaction zone. In nydrocarbon flames, these ions are primarily generated by chemi-ionization, al- though thermo-ionization could also be impor- tant, particularly for soot-or metal-laden flames [6,7].
