Reality TV as a research field is foremost complex and dynamic, as it has undergone an enormous diversification since the 1990s. Dozens of new formats were introduced every year. With this essay, we attempted to conceptualize reality TV as a meta-genre that includes various subgenres. Hence, examining the meta-genre's components, which may also apply to subgenres, most often serves the purpose to provide a theoretical definition of reality TV.
