It has been almost a decade since the original proposal of ADSL was brought to the attention of a telecommunication standards body. During that time, the idea of ADSL has been modified and refined to fit market demand, many generations of ADSL chip set have been developed, and numerous trials have been conducted to prove its viability. In this article, the early development and standardization efforts of ADSL are reviewed. This is followed by a discussion of practical issues such as central office network interface and customer premises configuration options. These issues have not been addressed extensively but implied by standards documents. The effect of in-house wiring and industry-wide standardization activities are then briefly addressed.
