Replacing copper wire in the local loop with glass fiber means that power will need to be provided locally rather than coming from the central office. The issues that this raises are addressed. The history of powering telecommunications in the local loop is briefly reviewed. Energy conservation and cost considerations are discussed. Distributed power processing is examined. Concerns specific to powering ISDN and fiber in the loop, respectively, are discussed.
