Statistical models are sometimes compared to tools like a hammer. While this analogy is meant to emphasize the practical nature of modeling, it however also unintentionally illustrates a problem summed up by Mark Twain: "To a man with a hammer, everything looks like a nail." The editors of a new book on methodology want to avoid hammering in screws by increasing the number of "statistical tools hanging around our work belts." The self-proclaimed aim is then "to explain what these methods are and much of what they can do, not to formally teach (..) the mathematics."
