Each introduction of new media technology causes entire sections of society to vibrate with excitement; social scientists are by no means immune to this exhilaration either. As Orvar Lofgren argues in his postscript to Geographies of Communication, new media technology produces hope as well as fear of the rapidly approaching future. However, before different echelons of society decide either to take up new media technologies or send them directly to the scrap pile, it seems worthwhile to study the complex relationships between these new media technologies and society with an open mind and to allow new phenomena to present themselves without being restrained by subjective, normative, or even Utopian ideas of the near future. Geographies of Communication provides us with such a scientific framework in which the implications of new-media technologies for societal and communal life can be adequately studied.
