On the stochastic nature of thermomechanical properties in glass reinforced polyester laminates

The objective of this work is to study the statistical nature of effective thermal expansion coefficients (TECs) in glass reinforced polyester (GRP) laminates. To this end, thermomechanical properties and their stochastic behavior of hand lay-up composite laminates of various stacking sequences are defined by conducting a comprehensive experiment program. An adequate number of experiments is performed for two basic glass fabricvs and a representative combination thereof in a stacking sequence typical of what is used in manufacturing composite rotor blades of wind turbines. Components of the anisotropy tensor of TECs for the aforementioned materials are measured using an automated thermomechanical analyze (TMA) of DuPont. Two statistical distributions (normal, Weibull) were tested to model the variation of TECs and both of them proved to be a very good fit to the experiment results as revealed by Kolmogorov-Smirno (K-S) tests. An analytical metrology is also presented in this work for the prediction of the stochastic behavior of the laminate's effective TEC in terms of the distribution properties of building laminae. Comparison of the experimental cumulative distributions for the effective TEC and the theoretical ones proved the accuracy of the proposed approach.
