Parametric design optimization of an entrapped fiber connection

The performance of a composite structure is often strongly dependent upon the connection between a composite component and a metallic end fitting. These connections have traditionally been made by bonding, pinning or riveting the fitting in place. The entrapped fiber joint, an alternative connection that incorporates the metal end fitting into the composite before final cure, is discussed and analyzed herein. The entrapped fiber connection is capable of carrying high axial tensile loads and is relatively easy to fabricate using the filament winding process. Nine geometric parameters that may impact the performance of the entrapped fiber connection were chosen for study. Analysis of these parameters, using fractional factorial experimentation and FEA, showed that only two of the nine parameters selected contributed significantly to the strength of the connection. By setting these parameters at their optimal levels the stress components in the connection were reduced from 38 to 75%.
