Remember the days of dial-up internet? Most of the time your PC remained offline, and when you finally got online you'd be clocking up a small fortune in call costs. Today's always-on broadband connections are much more convenient, but they also mean your PC is constantly open to the internet. If you suspect your PC is under attack, or simply want to cancel a file upload or stop an email being sent, you'll be grateful for a quick-access panic button (triggered by a keyboard shortcut) that takes your computer temporarily offline.
