At times of great national crisis, Brits are renowned for pulling together and showing fearlessness in the face of adversity. But 47-year-old Michael Whitty took a very different approach to combating the coronavirus pandemic. Instead of abiding by lockdown regulations like everyone else, he decided to sneak out of his home in April and use firelighters to set fire to a mobile-phone mast in Kirkby, after foolishly believing crazy conspiracy theories about how the disease could be spread by 5G. Thankfully, no one was hurt in the blaze. But the cost of Whitty's pointless attack is estimated to be between £10,000 and £15,000 and the mast was out of action for 11 days. Whitty, who has 29 previous convictions including for possession of firearms, was imprisoned for three years at Liverpool Crown Court, making it slightly harder for him to break lockdown rules.
