Microsoft has confirmed that it will end 'Mainstream' support for all versions of Windows 7 on 13 January 2015, but continue offering security updates for another five years. The end of Mainstream support means that Windows 7 will no longer receive new features or tools. There will be no further updates beyond Service Pack 1, which was released on 22 February 2011. From January, Windows 7 will enter the 'Extended' support phase, which only includes free security updates. When that ends, on 14 January 2020, Windows 7 will enter the 'end of support' period, during which no security fixes will be released and Microsoft won't offer online technical help. That's the critical phase Windows XP entered in April this year, although Microsoft did release an emergency fix after the deadline.
