Windows 8.1 makes it easy to turn off system and app notifications for set periods of time or switch them off completely. In the Modern tile interface, move your cursor to the bottom right of the screen to access the Charms menu, click Settings, then 'Change PC settings' at the bottom. Next, click 'Search and apps', then Notifications. Click the sliders beside the system notifications you want to turn off. Under Quiet Hours, click the From and To dropdown menus to set times between which you don't want to receive notifications. Scroll down to see a list of the apps on your device and click the sliders beside those whose notifications you want to turn off completely.
