Broadband speed checkers such as SpeedTest tend to give faster readings when you're connected via wired Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi. That's not surprising, because Wi-Fi has to travel through thin air and is more susceptible to interference, but the difference shouldn't be significant. If it is, your router may be the weakest link. The expensive way to fix this is to replace your old ISP-issued router with one of the latest 802.11ac routers, some of which can connect at a cable-busting 1,300Mbps. But that's a bit like buying a car than can do 1,300 miles an hour - not much practical use when the speed limit is 60mph or 30Mbps.
