We've been singing the praises of Sony NEX cameras for years. With their SLR-quality sensors and interchangeable lenses squeezed into slim, lightweight builds, they deliver premium image quality without the bulk and complexity of a conventional digital SLR. Sony has killed off its NEX brand name, but the Alpha A5000 is cut from the same cloth as last year's impressive NEX-3N (see our review, Issue 408). It's one of the cheapest models in the new Alpha range. Compared to its pricier stablemates, its controls are more basic, its performance slightly slower and there's no touchscreen. It retains the NEX-3N's pop-up flash, slim bundled lens and hinged screen (see photo, bottom right), which flips right over for those who like to take selfies.
