Despite the fact that the Windows graphical user interface has been with us for 19 years, the command-line interface is far from moribund. As we've seen in past columns it can be used for purposes as varied as restricting a user's login hours to sending messages over a network. Back in June 2003 we looked at a couple of ways of customising the prompt window, changing the screen colours via the system menu and using TweakUI to enable autocomplete. If you've been used to the Windows 95/98 or ME version of the command prompt, brace yourself: the XP version derives from Windows NT and 2000 rather than MS-Dos and there's much more, not just in terms of command power, but also in terms of features designed to make the thing easier to use and more in keeping with the 21st century. Just to confuse matters, the old-style MS-Dos command interpreter, command.com is still included with XP, but we're going to concentrate on the NT/2000 version, cmd.exe. There is much more than we can cover in a single column, so this month we'll take a look at some of the interface enhancements.
