If you read May's Hands on Web development column, or February's Feeding time feature (www.pcw.co.uk/ Features/1152354), then you'll know about RSS, the XML-based technology that lets readers know when a website has been updated. As Nigel Whitfield said, the Simple in Really Simple Syndication is something of a misnomer. There are, it appears, nine RSS standards and a rival, but similar, technology known as Atom. In addition, RSS, depending on whom you ask, either stands for Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication. Fortunately, from the consumer's end we don't have to worry about any of this. RSS, we should point out, is an abbreviation (like BBC) not an acronym (like Dos). What you need to access an RSS feed is a purpose-made RSS reader or 'aggregator', which can either be a standalone application or a plug-in for a browser or mail program. This month we came across a new contender, the Hotbot Desktop. The name is a tad confusing, as its main presence is an Internet Explorer toolbar. It's always been a personal ambition to have Internet Explorer completely filled with add-on toolbars, rather like the mirrors and lights on a mod's scooter, so this was a welcome addition to our browsing experience.
