Converting all your music to mp3 has a number of benefits, not least of which is the way you can quickly create a playlist that includes everything from Johnny Cash to Slipknot, without having to shuffle CDs in and out of your player. But another major plus point is the way mp3s allow you to more easily organise and catalogue your music collection. Load up an mp3 in your music player and the chances are that it will display the song title, artist name and album title in the info bar. All this information is stored within the mp3 file itself, in a special digital tag. These tags can store lots of information, including the year the song was released and its genre. Hardware and software players are getting smarter about making use of this tagging information. For example, many now allow you to automatically create a playlist of tracks based on a particular decade. So, if you are having an Eighties party you can filter all the tracks in your collection so you're just left with those released during that decade.
