Mankind made a commitment to put a man on the moon because we knew it was possible. Arthur Schawlow and Charles Townes attempted to create coherent microwave radiation because Einstein thought it might be possible. Both projects were funded by the US because the visionaries had the upper hand over the cynics in those days. The word MASER/LASER which stands for Microwave/Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation was redefined by cynics of the day (1960) as standing for Means of Acquiring Support for Expensive Research! When man went to the moon, he had no idea of what we might find up there, and frankly he didn't find very much. But the spin off technologies resulting from man's adventures in space, have been spectacular.
