Although you've been able to have different users -each with their own settings - on the same PC since Windows 95, Windows XP is pretty keen on you doing this at setup, and it does have some advantages. In particular the facility to switch users (almost) instantly, without having to close files and programs then log off and back on is a great time-saver (see screenshot 1). To enable fast switching, the computer must not be part of a domain: it must be a standalone computer or part of a peer-to-peer workgroup. Second, the feature needs to be turned on by a user with administrator rights. Go to Control Panel, User Accounts, then pick 'Change the way users log on or off. This leads to two options: the first is to display the Welcome screen, with a list of users, rather than the classic logon dialogue, and the second is to enable Fast User Switching. Note that you must enable the first option in order to get access to the second. You'll then get the option to switch user when you choose Log Off from the start menu, which will take you back to the Welcome screen. For an even faster way, press the Windows key and L to go straight to the Welcome screen.
