Although you can manage without one, most small business networks will benefit from having a server, if only because it makes files and printers a lot easier to share and those shares to manage. You can also back up everything of importance in one hit. And servers can be used to host in-house email systems and run other shared applications, such as databases and web servers. Over the next few months I'll be looking at what's involved in setting up a small business server, starting with some of the basics of file sharing.
