In January's column we dealt with the problem of maintaining the order of the Windows Open and Save common dialogues, but we didn't find a way of preserving the view settings, such as list, details etc. Since then Paul Richards has brought Dialog Box Assistant to my attention (see screenshot 1). This utility, which you can find at www.win-utilities.com, adds two buttons to the dialogue's toolbar. One button gives a list of recently used files, the other recently used folders. In itself, this isn't terribly exciting, until you drop into the options menu, where you will find you can save the view layout, the dialogue box size and the last folder accessed. You can also lock specified folders onto the recently used list and the dialogue can be configured on a per-application basis.
