The range of graphics cards on the market today varies in price from ￡9.99 to ￡400 and beyond, so choosing the right card for your needs is no easy task. Choose one card and your PC can be transformed into a gaming beast that will handle textures, bump mapping and lighting effects with ease. Choose another and you'll get a TV tuner and the ability to use your hard drive as a video recorder. Choose that ￡9.99 card and you'll get a basic picture and very little else. There's a host of considerations to bear in mind, starting with your motherboard and version of Windows, and an idea of what you'd like to do with your PC. Next you need to think about your budget, after which it's time to get down to the nitty gritty of graphics chips, memory, ports and software. To make your life easier we've tested and reviewed 21 graphics cards split into three price groups; up to ￡100, ￡101 to ￡200 and over ￡200. The cards range from ￡67 to ￡297 (suggested retail prices, including VAT) and involve seven different graphics chips. We've also produced technology pieces on AGP, graphics chips, the graphics card companies, DirectX and drivers, as well as an extensive features table to make buying easy. In short, we have done our utmost to help you make an informed choice, and ensure you buy the most suitable graphics card for your current and future needs.
