Theoretical and Methodological Pluralism in Designing Effective Lexical Support for CALL

In the preceding discussion we have tried to show how the design features of LINC are motivated by theoretically driven empirical research. In their recent overview of the field, however, Schmitt and McCarthy (1997) often make the point that, despite the enormous advances in research on S/FL vocabulary acquisition, it is a extremely complex process of which many of the underlying cognitive processes are still not clear. This stresses the provisional nature of both the theoretical and empirical justification we have provided for LINC. The large range of mediating variables that could potentially affect the effectivity of LINC, is a further reason to build as many experimental checks into the process of designing input materials and exercises to determine their effectivity for specific learner groups (cf. Van de Poel, Nordisk Arbog for Sprogteknologi 2003 i.p. for an empirical analysis of creative writing within LINC). Adapting and redesigning in the light of such research and any other research should, therefore, be part of the whole design and evaluation process of any CALL-application. An essential part of this redesigning process would also be the testing and evaluation of new technologies. One could think here, for instance, of speech recognition technologies (cf. Eskenazi, 1999) and the use of parallel corpora and concordances (cf. St. John, 2001; Lixun, 2001) and new learning methodologies, for example including learners in the development of multimedia materials (cf. Nikolova, 2002), and enriching the definitions of new words with multimedia components (cf. Al-Seghayer, 2001).
