Not too long ago, management of storage was simple. When disk space filled up, data centers backed up as many files as possible to tape, employees were continually barraged with memos urging them to delete unnecessary data, and more disk drives were purchased. As long as new storage technology kept rapidly expanding the size of disk units while reducing the cost per megabyte, this approach seemed cheap and simple. Then IT managers began to notice the escalating costs of administering all those tapes and disks, and users began to complain about missing or misplaced data. These days, as even small companies are struggling with terabytes of data, a new approach must be adopted. Storage resource management (SRM) is becoming an essential tool in every well-run data center. An important component of SRM is information lifecycle management (ILM).
