Polhemus recently unveiled the Patriot Wireless system, a six degree-of-free-dom (6DOF) solution with a small footprint (6.75 × 6.25 ×1.75 inches) at a reasonable cost. The system is capable of tracking as many as four independent markers over areas at a rate of 50 updates per second. Each self-contained marker is tracked in space by one or two receptors. Each two-ounce marker contains all the necessary processing hardware, including a rechargeable lithium-polymer battery enclosed in a hard plastic shell. The battery provides power for approximately two hours and is easily removable for recharging.
