The bold attempt to film J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fable of Middle-earth has been a resounding success. Already, the first two films in director Peter Jackson's rousing Lord of the Rings trilogy from New Line Cinema have become classics―very successful classics: The Fellowship of the Ring, with its Hobbits, wizards, elves, and Orcs, generated $862.2 million in box-office rev-enue; the second film, The Two Towers, topped that with ticket sales of $920.5 million, putting it into fourth place among all films, of all time. Both movies count nominations for Best Picture and Best Director among their 13 Oscar bids, and the films have won six Oscars, including two for visual effects. Many pundits bet Jackson will win an Oscar for Best Director this year, some think the third film, The Return of the King released on December 17, will be to the running for Best Picture, and most believe the crew will take home a third Oscar for visual effects. It would belittle Jackson's grand accomplishment to call these sagas "effects films." Yet without visual effects, both practical and digital, we wouldn't have seen, in the first two films, 10,000 Orcs attacking Helm's Deep; Gandalf fighting a fiery Balrog, Gollum leading Frodo and Bam to Mount Doom, or an army of Ents high-stepping out of a forest.
