Domain decomposition methods: Recent advances and new challenges in engineering

This issue of Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering is devoted to domain decomposition methods. These methods have been in the center of a highly active research community for more then fifteen years. The very idea of domain decomposition is even much older since the father of domain decomposition is for many H.A. Schwarz who, in 1870, published a famous paper entitled Ueber einen Grenzuebergang durch alternierendes Ver-fahren. The concept of domain decomposition is also underlying the paradigm of dynamic substructuring methods, a technique developed in the sixties. Substructuring techniques, also known as component mode synthesis, aim at reducing the dimension of models in structural dynamics where each substructure (i.e. subdomain) is represented by a reduced basis.
