Spend time gathering internal information before embarking on any consolidation or virtualisation project. "It is surprising how many organisations don't have a handle on the cost structure of their IT assets," says Rakesh Kumar, vice-president at Gartner Research. Tony Lock, programme director at analyst Freeform Dynamics, says getting the basics right is crucial. "Start doing some asset management. Know what you've got, who's using it and why, and take it from there. You need to know how resources should be re-allocated."
