In his first public appearance since he stepped down as Microsoft's CEO, Steve Ballmer again acknowledged that the company missed the boat on mobile. But this time he put a different spin on his analysis of Microsoft's strategic moves, and evoked the business model that has led to so much success for the company's rival, Apple. "The thing I regret is that we didn't put the hardware and the software together soon enough," Ballmer said, referring not just to smartphones, but also to mobile in general. Putting hardware and software together is Apple's business model, and that approach has proved successful over the years because the company not only creates both elements, but also controls them from first to last.
