摘要

John Henry Coates, Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS), is quoted on the back cover: This remarkable book is the first one to attempt to analyze the vast literature arising from 20th century mathematics. It lists and comments on a selection of the most influential books written during this time in all of the major fields of mathematics. This selection is obviously based on the personal preferences and research interests of the author, as noted in the subtitle. Each chapter (and the book itself) opens with a photo of a library or another building at the University of Michigan (UM) and with several photos of classical mathematics books from UM libraries published before 1900 and related to the material discussed in the chapter (or the book). These photos are annotated by nicely written one-paragraph essays on famous mathematicians-the authors of these books. In the main body of the text, for each book, Ji provides an overview, often with his very interesting observations and critical assessments, sometimes with appropriately chosen quotes from that book, and always with carefully selected excerpts from reviews of that book published in MathSciNet, ZentralblattMATH, Bulletin of the American Mathematical Society, and elsewhere (including Amazon). Regretfully, with very rare exceptions, the authors of these reviews are not mentioned (a typical excerpt starts with: "According to ZentralblattMATH ..."). The author's choice of books and quoted review fragments, together with his own observations, extensive historical notes, and evaluations in the context of other books (no book exists in isolation), makes browsing or reading this tome an interesting and engaging activity.
