The scope of the book is the cost estimation, benchmarking, and risk assessment (CoBRA) method, launched in 1998. The core idea of the method is to enhance the estimates provided by traditional complexity-size-based metrics by applying an effort overhead (EO) factor gathered from empirical analysis of past projects. The author thoroughly explains the basics and presents real practical cases throughout the book, in a way that any metrics engineer will be able to understand. Readers who finish the book will be able to set up a CoBRA method easily. However, the metrics engineer must embrace two key principles on which the method is based: the factors that directly influence the EO are orthogonal, and the EO behavior is homogeneous among projects. With these assumptions, the CoBRA method is very simple and easy to use, since it is based on a linear relationship between effort and the complexity size of the software.
