The past five years have seen box throughputs at ports on Mexico's west coast rise, the 2.1 million TEU handled in 2008 comparing with just 931.000TEU in 2004 (see table).rnWhile 2009, will be much quieter as a result of the current economic recession and financial crises, the region will probably still see its share of Mexico's container-handling activity increase.rnIn 2008, an estimated 63% of the 3.3 million TEU processed by the country's main ports - those controlled by the Administracion Portuaria Integrals (APIs) which are part of the Secretaria de Comuni-caciones y Transportes - was routed over Pacific coast facilities.rnThe two main ports are Manzanillo and Lazaro Cardenas, which handled 1.41 million TEU and close to 525.000TEU, respectively in 2008 (see table).rnThe two ports are separated by about 200km of coastline and although senior executives at their respective API's pointed to their distinct and specific market opportunities, they do compete in the hinterland, particularly for cargo moving to/from cities, such as Mexico City, Guadalajara, Aguascalientes and Monterrey.
