Although the rates of growth posted by ports in the Far East were well below those of recent years, most did at least remain in positive territory in 2008. John Fossey reports. Ports in the Far East continue to handle the lion's share of the global container business, and even as volumes fell in the final few months of the year, the region's share of the market was still up in 2008. Few changes are expected in this trend over the next decade, particularly as cargo liftings in various intra-Asia corridors are rising rapidly. Additionally, it is hard to see any massive relocation of industry back to Europe and North America, and while India will become progressively more significant, China and, increasingly, Vietnam have significant cost advantages when it comes to labour and industrial development costs and taxation issues.
