Effective since December 1, 2007, Japan's three international ports, namely Kobe, Osaka and Amagasaki-Nishi-nomiya-Ashiya, located within Osaka Bay, have been integrated into the new Hanshin super-port. The move is intended to strengthen the competitiveness of this region's ports and to put them on a similar footing to those located in Tokyo Bay (the Keihin super-port complex).
