In soils with a high water table, underground concrete structures such as bridge piers, intake structures, pump houses, and dumper pits can be constructed using several methods to prepare for construction of the structure, including: 1. Dewatering the site using well points before excavating; 2. Constructing a sheet pile cofferdam or concrete slurry walls extending into an impermeable layer, excavating, and dewatering; 3. Constructing a sheet pile cofferdam or concrete slurry walls, excavating, placing a concrete plug at the base of the cofferdam using a tremie, and dewatering; 4. Stabilizing the site using ground freezing or grouting and then excavating; and 5.
