Published earlier this year, McVitie's Biscuit Market Report 1995 gives a detailed picture of the biscuit market. This area of the food industry is now worth more than £1.6bn, a figure nine times the value of the soups market, three times the size of both the tea and instant coffee markets, and over twice the value of the ice cream sector. The last ten years have seen the market volume grow by 9%, a rate keeping well in pace with the rate of inflation. This reflects biscuits' popularity amongst consumers, who appreciate how versatile biscuits can be: a snack, part of a light meal or a lunch-box, a treat, a gift, or just an essential accompaniment to getting together with friends over a cup of tea.
