摘要

Humans are hardwired for sweet products. We crave it, we seek it, we demand it. We run on it: glucose is the primary fuel that feeds both body and brain. The drive to ingest sweets for energy is powerful and so overwhelming that even when physically sated, too often people will continue to pursue sweets. Until recently, this paradigm also was our undoing. This system of constant craving worked fine when the availability of calories from sweets were hard to come by and required expending the energy it took to acquire those sugary calories - perhaps running and climbing fruit trees between being chased by the competition for such resources. But that has long ceased to be the case, and the developed world has become pandemically obese on the abundance of calories we can now so easily obtain.
