Consumers' growing appetite for chocolate and cocoa products worldwide is generating increased global demand for cocoa beans. Meeting this steady growth in demand, however, is challenging for cocoa producers, who often face limited access to agricultural technology, planting materials and market information, low yields due to pests and disease and, as a result, achieve minimal financial returns. In addition, social issues, such as poverty, chronic diseases, inadequate education and difficult working conditions, are everyday struggles for the many cocoa farming communities, especially in West Africa where 70% of the world cocoa crop is produced.
