Since we have been critical of logical relativism, we probably need to explain that we are not doing this on behalf of logical universal-ism. Surely enough, we are disputing whether there is a manifest contradiction in Zande religious practices and are suggesting that there may be no contradiction at all, but this is not because we want to maintain that the Azande and ourselves are alike, in that we both think in terms of standard logic. We are actually arguing that neither of us is best characterized as thinking in general in terms of formal logic or not. For us, the kind of comparisons attempted by both uni-versalists and relativists are suspect, since they overlay the portrayal of cultural practices with a set of a priori concerns and, in important respects, obscure the actual similarities and differences between "them" and "us."
