摘要

You're driving down a deserted country road late at night, you have a pacemaker, and you suddenly find yourself clutching at your chest, the victim of a heart attack. Chances are, you'd be at the mercy of passersby, if any, and their willingness, or lack thereof, to stop and help. But wait. There may soon be an alternative. By linking real-time health-monitoring equipment with cellular technology and the Internet, it is now possible for your pacemaker to send an emergency message to your cardiologist, who then could monitor your condition on any computer, locate you via the Global Positioning Satellite system, and summon help. Moreover, the doctor could then direct treatment, remotely. Sound far-fetched? It really isn't-such a system has been proposed, but is not yet in operation. Others, however rudimentary, are.
