2008 GDP Growth forecasts for the five economies surveyed (below) have all worsened this month on the back of financial market volatility and slowing growth fundamentals. Indeed, the US GDP outlook has weakened so dramatically that the Fed cut interest rates by a cumulative 125 basis points at the end of January. Heavy stock market losses, coupled with data showing the housing recession spreading to other parts of the economy, prompted the FOMC's decision. Central banks across the G-7 have noted the Fed's aggressive policy stance but are so far holding back from rate moves of similar magnitude.
