Election junkies, and I'm not one of them, have had a lot to deal with in recent weeks. The Scottish Parliament, Welsh Assembly, local councils and more recently the European elections have provided psephologists and statisticians with a mass of material over which to pour and upon which to comment. The election I enjoyed most was the one in June in South Africa for which I was chosen to be one of over a hundred United Nations observers. It was the first time I had visited the Republic and it was interesting to see the giant strides the people are making not just in embracing democracy but in reconstructing their country too. There is a lot to do. Transport infrastructure, energy production, water purification and distribution all provide enormous challenges.
